Road Sentinel

We sell the record of a road.

A mile with pylons gives an unbroken account of everything that moved through it. We sell it by the mile.

01 / The record

What a mile produces

  • What. The class, size and shape of each thing that moved.
  • Where. Its whole path across the intersection, not restarted at each view.
  • How fast. Speed along that path, and the order things arrived.
  • What else. Everything around it at the time.

None of the four is keyed to a person.

02 / Three layers

Three layers, sold on their own

Live is the street as it happens. The record is what a mile has already produced. Imagery is the picture behind both. Take one, take all three, or add imagery to a road you already read.

Cities, transit agencies, insurers, carmakers and research programs buy from the same record. Police and courts buy a place and a time on the same terms. We publish every request they make.

03 / One record

Followed, not spotted

A camera spots a thing. Later it spots something and cannot tell you it is the same thing. Pylons hand a moving object along, so a path stays whole end to end.

Fig 01

How coverage overlaps between pylonsA three-lane road seen from above. Four pylons stand along one side. Each pylon covers an oval of road under it. Each oval overlaps the next, so the road is covered end to end with no gap between pylons. An object in an overlap is seen by two pylons at once. One object crosses the whole stretch. It pulls out into the next lane and back. It is drawn as one unbroken line. It carries one number. That number is retired when the object leaves.4417How coverage overlaps between pylonsA three-lane road seen from above. Two pylons stand along one side. Each pylon covers an oval of road under it. One object crossing four pylons. The number it carries never changes hands, and it means nothing once it leaves.

04 / Today

Built and running

  • The transparency log. Live and empty on purpose. A record that appears under pressure is not a record.
  • Two-person release. No one can release data alone. Not even a founder.
  • A way to report a security bug. Safe harbor and a security.txt.
  • The sub-processor list. Short, and published anyway.
  • This site. Nothing loads from another host. No analytics. One script, in the page, for the theme. Check your network tab.

Next is the pylon registry. It goes live with the first pylon. Then the customer portal, where the record gets looked up and bought.

05 / The limit

There is no person in the record.

Not a policy we could quietly revise. An object carries a number that is retired when it leaves and never issued again, so there is nothing to sell that follows anybody. Our privacy rules
